She discussed the benefits of family-centered care, including preparation for decision-making and advocacy for the patient. However, the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, such as limited visitation and reduced communication, have disrupted family engagement and impacted patient outcomes. Punn highlighted the importance of finding creative solutions to facilitate presence, engagement, and empowerment. Some strategies mentioned include providing physical spaces for families outside patient rooms, allowing visitors during designated hours, facilitating virtual visitations, and creating designated communicators to provide updates to families. Punn also emphasized the need to recruit and equip a team to support family engagement. Overall, both speakers stressed the importance of considering equity and family-centered care during times of crisis.
