Welcome to the 51st Critical Care Congress. Consistent with the theme of this year's Congress, this session is discussing critical care medicine, stepping up to diversity,  and actions to support these declarations. I'm Sandra Cain Gill, a professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh. I'm also the president for  the Society of Critical Care Medicine. I've been invited to speak about the actions for change by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. I wanted to first to begin by  just discussing our ongoing actions. To note, in 2017, SCCM created a diversity, equity, and inclusion committee. Some charges of the committee were to raise  awareness about the benefits of increased diversity and encourage participation by underrepresented populations in SCCM's activities. This continues to be an ongoing effort  and activity of the society. When we think about diversity, we think about including a wide range of individuals from different social and ethnic backgrounds,  and different genders and individuals with different sexual orientations. I'm presenting to you a collage of women. I wanted you to take for a moment to  consider what these women have in common. If you guessed that these are the previous nine women presidents of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, then you'd be right.  I've also pointed an arrow to acknowledge Dr. Carolyn Becks, who was the first female president for the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2020. What's been noted is that  professional organizations have a tendency to lack women in the leadership roles in professional organizations. SCCM has been acknowledged as one of  the medical professional organizations that's had the most women presidents.  That was some of our, very briefly, our ongoing activities at SCCM and also highlighting the acknowledgement of the diverse leadership that we have had.  Can we do better? Absolutely. Now is a time for change and we need to continue to consider diversity, equity, and inclusion actions going forward. Next, I'll be discussing  the newer actions that are being undertaken by SCCM. This includes removing divisive terms in SCCM's policies and procedures. SCCM is working on developing and  distributing contemporary lexicon to describe BIPOC and LGBTQ individuals and communities. This lexicon will be developed by the DEI committee and reviewed and updated annually.  The lexicon will be disseminated to volunteer speakers, sections, and committee members who are working on any written work products for the society. SCCM will support the use of  appropriate terminology in written and verbal communications. SCCM is collecting the use of preferred pronouns for members, so SCCM may include preferred choice of  pronouns on badges for Congress and other activities. Volunteer committees, task force, section of society leadership, and staff participation will require  training on DEI and implicit bias. Speaker invitations for Congress and other educational meetings will emphasize specific considerations for diversity,  be addressed when applicable. In addition, when data are not available, then the speakers would acknowledge this point in their presentation, such as stating lack of  data or lack of evidence or more research is needed.  Awards criteria are being reviewed by a task force to determine if the selection and processes for all awards assure DEI. This task force will make recommendations to  council for considerations for modifications for any awards not meeting these criteria. The DEI committee is being charged with creating a plan for  a strategic mentorship program to engage underrepresented members and opportunities for a future in organizational leadership. SCCM is working with the college to develop  criteria for inclusion of evidence-based practice recommendations as part of all guidelines moving forward whenever data are available. DEI is being incorporated as a component of  the strategic planning process through inclusion in the scoring criteria, and will also be asking for specific calls for proposals to enhance DEI in critical care medicine.  SCCM is working to implement new programming, and also to consider papers that are specific to any inequities in the care of critically ill and injured patients.  For example, in September of 2023, the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation made recommendations for race-free equations in estimating kidney function.  SCCM currently has a task force working on best ways to appropriately implement that particular recommendation and the other recommendations into clinical practice.  Overall, all these important actions that are being implemented by the society require every volunteer member, every individual in leadership to be  committed to being an agent for change so that we can successfully implement DEI throughout all organizational activities.
