Hello, we are the 2021 Critical Care Cognitive Program Committee co-chairs. I am Jose Diaz-Gomez, I'm currently the Medical Director for Cardiothoracic Mechanical  Circulatory Support and Transplant Critical Care at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  And I'm Lillian Emlitt, Associate Program Director at the University of Pittsburgh Internal Medicine Critical Care Medicine Training Program at the Multidisciplinary Critical  Care Training Program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. And I'm Beth Taylor, I'm a Research Scientist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.  And we'd like to welcome you to the 50th anniversary first ever virtual SCCM Congress taking place January 31st to February 12th, 2021.  This has been a totally unexpected and challenging year for all of us during the pandemic. So this 50th Congress, which had been planned for sunny California, is now taking place  online. The good news, we can still dress like we are in California or in our pajamas. And as critical care professionals, we really know how to adapt.  So this Congress, we are bringing to you the best possible virtual learning experience. We want to take this opportunity to share the highlights of the Congress and talk about  its development and this behind the scenes discussion. We hope you enjoy this exciting event as much as we have enjoyed working with our program committee and putting it together.  I will give you a hint. If you need some help, click on the SCCM help desk tile to access the instructional video  that lets you know exactly how to best navigate the website and develop your own personalized schedule.  The website and the app have excellent resources to help you make the most of your Congress experience. Now the virtual Congress website works best on a Chrome browser.  So click on the SCCM help desk there on that tile for any additional information. So how did we get here?  First, the need to transition to a virtual platform was identified in early summer as the pandemic worsened.  We wanted to find out what our members and Congress attendees were looking for in a virtual event.  SCCM sent out and compiled the results of two surveys to determine how the virtual Congress should be conducted.  And we appreciate everyone that provided their responses and feedback. The key results were that the Congress should last two weeks, have fewer sessions, but more  CE, and that shorter sessions were more desirable than longer sessions. So with those thoughts in mind, we got to work.  We had to postpone our longer pre and post courses for 2021 and focus instead on providing  members with four-hour master classes, which provide in-depth sessions on adult and pediatric  cardiovascular physiology, palliative care challenges in the ICU, and reimagining teaching interprofessionally.  The opening plenary sessions are a very important part of each year's Congress, and this year's lineup is as impressive as ever.  Outgoing SCCM President Lou Kaplan and incoming President Greg Martin will share their thoughts in the opening session Monday, February 1st at 8 a.m. Central.  In celebration of SCCM's 50th anniversary, we invited a medical futurist to talk about the future of critical care medicine.  And additional plenary speakers will share the best of their research and experience with you.  As always, we have a wide range of concurrent sessions in a variety of learning formats, including flipped classrooms and pro-con debates for you to delve into.  To make it easier for you to plan your time, it is the first time we've bundled sessions  together and hope you find these compilations of related information a useful tool in organizing  the time you have available to see those sessions, which are of the most interest to you. Some of these bundles include COVID pandemic leadership, perioperative medicine, sepsis,  disease innovation, and many more. Lay-breaking science will feature in the lay-breaking plenary and concurrent sessions.  Articles, which will be featured in Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and  Lancet Global Health are included. We thank Craig Coppersmith, our discovery liaison, to the current committee for helping us to develop the best possible lay-breaking sessions.  Critical cross-talks, moderated by the in-training session and featuring discussion on current topics by section faculty, are always a popular session at Congress.  A broad selection of bonus CE, CME sessions were developed for you. This enduring material is available for you whenever you have time.  There are a number of opportunities for you to interact with your fellow professionals  in the Q&A and after sessions, in the continue the conversation sessions with plenary speakers, session faculties, or your section chair members.  In the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Congress, we are featuring some of our SCCM past presidents that were going to be present in luminary lounges.  So please take the opportunity to speak with and learn about the history of critical care and SCCM from some very impressive and wise speakers.  Roundtable discussions are popular and part of Congress again, and we have included a wide variety of topics for you to explore during those sessions.  In thinking about our lives, we also want to provide the opportunity for you to learn about what else other fellow members are doing personally and professionally, and to learn  some wellness and burnout mitigation strategies. The member-to-member sessions do just that. From yoga to music to 3D printing, there are a lot of options for you to explore, and we  appreciate everyone that volunteered to share their time and experience. Enjoy learning about current research topics in the abstracts and related presentations.  See what your fellow critical care professionals from around the globe have shared about their COVID experience as well. And lastly, we've also built in some fun.  The critical care knowledge quest, the SCCM raffle, and the stumped intensivist session will give you the opportunity to have some fun and indulge your competitive side.  Lastly, join in the fun and make some cocktails or mocktails to celebrate SCCM's 50th anniversary following the specially-developed recipes of mixologist Mixed Metapores on Friday,  February 5th, in the late afternoon after convocation. We did not forget the exhibit hall that is featured at the in-person congress either. Check out the virtual career fair.
