COVID-19 Temperature Trajectories Correlate With Hyperinflammatory and Hypercoagulable Subphenotypes

In a recent study published in Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Siva Bhavani discussed the correlation between COVID-19 temperature trajectories and specific sub-phenotypes. The study analyzed data from over 5,900 COVID-19 patients and classified them into four temperature trajectory sub-phenotypes: hyperthermic slow resolvers, hyperthermic fast resolvers, normothermic, and hypothermic. The study found that the hyperthermic slow resolvers had the highest mortality rate and elevated levels of inflammatory markers, suggesting a hyperinflammatory sub-phenotype. On the other hand, the hypothermic patients had the lowest mortality rate and suppressed levels of inflammatory markers, indicating a hypoinflammatory sub-phenotype. The study also observed the effect of dexamethasone on these sub-phenotypes and found a decrease in the prevalence of hyperthermic slow resolvers with increased use of the drug. The findings of this study have potential implications for the development of targeted therapies based on temperature trajectories in COVID-19 and sepsis patients.
