Pdf Summary
Breastfeeding remains the optimal source of nutrition for infants, including those whose mothers have confirmed or suspected COVID-19, as breastmilk offers antibodies and other protective benefits against respiratory diseases. Evidence supports that breastfeeding aids in infant growth, development, and long-term health. To date, the virus causing COVID-19 has not been detected in breastmilk, although the evidence is based on limited studies.

While the primary risk of COVID-19 transmission to infants comes from respiratory droplets, WHO guidelines suggest that mothers with COVID-19 can safely breastfeed by following certain precautions. These include practicing good respiratory hygiene by wearing a mask during feeding, washing hands before and after touching the baby, and cleaning surfaces regularly. Furthermore, maintaining close contact with newborns through skin-to-skin touch and exclusive breastfeeding enhances infant well-being. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside healthy food until at least two years.

If a mother is too unwell to breastfeed due to COVID-19, alternative methods such as expressing milk, relactation, or using donor milk from certified banks can be employed to ensure the infant still receives breastmilk. It's essential for healthcare providers to support and guide mothers in these practices to continue delivering the benefits of breastfeeding despite the health challenges posed by COVID-19.
