SCCM Resource Library-Harnessing Data to Revolutionize Critical Care

The intensive care unit (ICU) is dense with data that, if systematically organized and shared, could significantly enhance healthcare research and patient outcomes. However, data fragmentation across different health systems hinders its full potential, particularly for broader clinical research and public health improvement. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for a structured data-sharing framework, compelling healthcare systems to work collectively on creating a foundation for unifying and utilizing critical care data efficiently.<br /><br />In response, the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) Discovery network has initiated a five-year agenda focusing on data science and sharing. This effort, known as the Discovery Data Science Campaign, aims to leverage large-scale data for clinical applications, using standardized data models. The campaign involves multiprofessional workgroups addressing data literacy, harmonization, and optimizing patient care through shared resources.<br /><br />The campaign recently published three pivotal articles: a primer on using electronic health record (EHR) data for research, development of a core critical care data dictionary, and guiding principles for data sharing and harmonization. These resources help clinicians understand data science principles, ensuring better-informed decisions and improved patient care. The data dictionary, developed using a modified Delphi method, provides a framework for collecting and analyzing critical illness data, thereby facilitating research and clinical practice.<br /><br />The guiding principles stress the importance of compliance with regulations and encourage adopting FAIR data practices to ensure data accessibility and interoperability. The ultimate goal is to foster a learning healthcare system where clinical practice and research inform one another continuously. Clinicians are encouraged to participate and offer feedback to enhance data-sharing initiatives, highlighting the campaign's ongoing nature and adaptability to community needs. This collaboration aims to revolutionize critical care by improving the shareability and reusability of clinical data on national and global scales.
