In this session, Dr. Ken Remy and Dr. Yibat Jung discuss the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MISC) as a manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. MISC is a rare but serious condition that affects children exposed to COVID-19. The clinical characteristics of MISC include fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, and cardiac manifestations. The exact mechanisms of MISC are still not fully understood, but there is evidence of immune overactivation and suppression. Common laboratory findings in MISC show elevated inflammatory markers and lymphopenia. The treatment approach to MISC involves the use of IVIG and steroids, as well as supportive care. The prognosis for children with MISC is generally good, with most patients recovering and experiencing resolution of their symptoms. However, long-term follow-up is still ongoing to fully understand the outcomes and complications of MISC. Collaborative research efforts are underway to further investigate MISC and improve our understanding and management of this condition.
