The second speaker, Dr. Ephraim Salik, discussed the development of a bacterial versus viral test using the BioFire system. The system is a point-of-care platform that delivers results in 45 minutes. Dr. Salik presented the results of validation studies, which showed that the test was superior to procalcitonin in distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections. The test also demonstrated the ability to detect bacterial and viral co-infections. Dr. Salik noted that the test could be a useful tool in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, particularly in critically ill patients. Overall, the webcast highlighted the potential of host response-based diagnostic tests in improving the diagnosis and management of bacterial and viral infections in the emergency department.
