Many medication errors can be prevented via safe medication practices, including the use of smart infusion pumps. Nearly 20 years after the introduction of smart infusion pumps with dose error reduction software, there are opportunities for the continued improvement of medication safety in critical care. Because of the significant volume of IV medications administered in hospitals, infusion pumps are widely used, with an estimated 90% of hospital patients receiving infusions using this technology.
