Pediatric sepsis is a life-threatening condition in children caused by a dysregulated response to infection. There are different definitions of sepsis used in clinical, administrative, and research settings. These definitions are necessary for children because their physiological responses and clinical presentations differ from adults. The International Consensus Conference on Pediatric Sepsis developed the first pediatric definition in 2005, taking into account age-specific parameters. Different definitions of sepsis can lead to variations in patient populations identified, clinical outcomes, and healthcare costs. Efforts are being made to evaluate and refine pediatric sepsis definitions to improve diagnosis and management of this condition in children.
