Dr. Ed Conway, Chief of Pediatric Critical Care at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, shared his experience of caring for adult patients in the pediatric ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, it was believed that only a small percentage of infections occurred in children, but this changed with the emergence of new variants. Considering the limited pediatric ICU beds, the hospital decided to close pediatric admissions except for trauma cases and transfer patients to a nearby Children's Hospital. The hospital staff had to adjust and establish new protocols for the care of adult patients in the pediatric ICU. They faced challenges such as staffing shortages, complications from adult diseases, and the impact on family-centered care.
