This article was first published in the Summer 2022 issue of Critical Connections.

The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the vital importance of conducting research to improve outcomes, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU). Nearly three years before the pandemic, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) established Discovery, the Critical Care Research Network, to foster collaborative critical care research and help incorporate findings into practice. These objectives align perfectly with the goal of this year’s Discovery Grant recipient, who is exploring the concept of implementing a daily assessment protocol for decannulating patients from venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO).

Critical Connections, the critical care industry's only magazine, provides information in cutting-edge topics in critical care useful to the entire multiprofessional team.
