Summary:<br /><br />The first study analyzed the impact of the opioid epidemic on pediatric ICU admissions for opioid poisonings. The study found a decreasing proportion of children being admitted to the ICU for opioid poisonings since 2010. The opioids primarily ingested were hydrocodone, oxycodone, codeine, and tramadol. The study also found an increase in moderate and major effects in children who ingested opioids, as well as an increase in hospitalizations to general and psychiatric hospitals. Naloxone use increased, indicating better education and accessibility. Synthetic opioids, intentional intent, and illicit opioids were associated with requiring ICU intervention.<br /><br />The second study aimed to characterize sepsis in patients with opioid use disorders in US hospitals. The study found that the rate of opioid use among hospitalized patients was 1.9%, with higher rates among younger patients. Patients with opioid use disorders who had sepsis had higher rates of comorbidities, ICU admission, longer length of stay, and positive blood cultures. However, they had lower mortality rates compared to those without opioid use disorders. The study also found an increasing incidence of hospitalizations with sepsis and opioid use disorders over time.<br /><br />Both studies highlight the need for increased awareness, recognition, and treatment for opioid-related issues. The first study recommends increasing mental health resources for children and decreasing access to opioids. The second study suggests focusing on aggressive treatment of sepsis in patients with opioid use disorders. However, the studies are limited by the use of administrative and electronic health record data.
