Video Summary

In this presentation, the speaker discusses the use of echocardiograms to predict cardiac arrest in hospitalized children. This is based on a study conducted by the speaker and their team. The study aimed to determine if there were specific pre-arrest electrocardiographic (EKG) changes that could be used to predict cardiac arrest in children. The study analyzed EKG data from pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest cases and found that certain EKG changes, such as prolongation of the RR interval, were common prior to arrest. The study also found that 88% of patients had return of spontaneous circulation and survival to ICU discharge. However, it was noted that 27% of patients had hypokalemia and 8.1% had hypocalcemia prior to the event. It was also found that almost half of the patients were exposed to dexmedetomidine within 24 hours prior to the event. The speaker concluded that certain EKG changes could be used to predict in-hospital cardiac arrest in children and suggested further research to evaluate EKG intervals at different time points and to correlate these changes with electrolyte imbalances and exposure to medications. Additionally, the speaker mentioned the potential use of heart rate variability to predict in-hospital cardiac arrest.
