Video Summary

The Pediatric Section Year in Review presented several studies on various topics in pediatric critical care. One study focused on the different immune and inflammatory phenotypes seen in sepsis and sepsis-induced multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in children. The study found that not all sepsis patients have the same pathophysiology, and there are different phenotypes associated with higher mortality rates. Another study examined the risk prediction model called PERSEVERE II, which uses biomarkers to predict mortality in critically ill septic children. The model was validated in an independent cohort and showed good performance in predicting mortality. Additionally, the study validated a similar risk prediction model in a mouse model of sepsis, which allows for the evaluation of biomarker-based therapies in preclinical models. Another study focused on clot formation in neonatal ECMO circuits. The study found that both low flow and high flow through the circuits were associated with clot formation. The high flow circuits were also associated with the expression of prothrombotic mediators. Lastly, a study examined the effects of a single exposure to inhalational anesthesia on the developing brain. The study found no long-term effects on neuronal structure or organization. Overall, these studies provide insight into the immune response in sepsis, the use of biomarkers for risk prediction, clot formation on ECMO circuits, and the effects of anesthesia on the developing brain.
